Why care about the envrionment?

In my last post, I should have mentioned that the responses to the government's recommendations about the fashion industry weren't all one-sided. Oxfam, Brotherhood of St. Laurence, and Fair Wear all responded as well and had their say about the issues with worker welfare and the environment in mind. Anyway, we'll see what happens.

I was interviewed over at a new fashion blog called The Clothing Menu. Click here to check it out.

This is what I wore the other day.

Vintage dress
Random jewellery

Ellie picked up my strand of pearls while I was putting my jewellery on, then proceeded to wander around the house, putting it on and taking it off and putting it on. I caught her in the hall with the flash.

..which she was a little wary of. She is learning something new every day and constantly surprising me. Amazing. Something I've been thinking about lately is how many people begin to care about being environmentally friendly after they have a child. Maybe because they realise that it's their child's future at stake, or there's something about babies that makes us want everything natural and fresh, like the little one? Maybe both.

For me, the caring did come after Ellie was born, but I'm not sure if it was because of her. I feel like I would have had the same reaction if I'd learned about the issues before she was born, but who knows. I'm still not entirely sure what my main reason for caring is, or maybe I just don't know how to word it. I just know that the world's current level of consumption is fundamentally not good and don't want to participate when alternatives are often easier, cheaper and more fulfilling.

What's your reason? Why do you care about the environment?

For me i think it comes from a philisophy of being one with everything and if u believe this it naturally impacts on all ur decisions and the way u think about the universe...

I've always been very environemtally-friendly. I was educated on recycling and such from a very young age, so i'm fortunate in that way. However, having said that, there's still an immense number of people my age (my sister included, who always throws garbage in our recycling bin and vice versa) who just don't think being green is important. It's sad!

Y'know, in a way I care about the environment for very shallow reasons - I think littering and pollution are ugly as hell. Flowers and trees and greenness and sweet-smelling air ftw! But I also think it's kinda neccessary to take care of the environment, make it the best/healthiest it can be - it shouldn't even be an issue, or something we have to convince people to do.

It's like how we know that we have to exercise and eat right to take care of our bodies. But having a good, healthy body means nothing if there's nowhere to live in it at. Look at all the crazy natural disasters that have caused so much global chaos in the last decade or so because of how mankind has treated nature so badly. Take care of the earth and the earth will take care of you, right?

Anyways, this was rully long. I guess I feel more strongly about this than I let on sometimes...

P.S. Ellie is adorable in that photo!

Ellie has grown up a lot! she looks a lot like you now :)

As for why I care about the environment... I guess I just feel that when I have a strong connection with nature, I feel a lot happier. Like, for example, we have a huge veggie patch at home, and it's relaly nice to eat a bunch of veggies (especially the cherry tomatoes that I'm addicted to at the moment) from the garden and know that you grew them yourself. It's nice to go for a walk through a rainforest and listen to birds chipring... it's nice to watch a sunset at the beach... I dunno, I guess all the things that make me most happy are to do with nature... and that's why I think it's important to protect our environment and make sure that future generations get to experience the same things that make us happy.

Ellie is very cute!

I have always cared about the environment. I don't think anything motivated it - I honestly think I was just bron with it. My sister, grandparents and lots of my cousins are equally passionate.

Although I have always cared about the envirnment and feel a strong connection with nature - it actually turned into a fear once i had my daughter. Fear at what we are doing to HER world. Fear that if i don't do anything to stop this destruction, that in 50 years time she will look back at the way we lived our lives and be horrified at how selfish we were with the worlds resources.

I agree with you that is seems many new parents have a green awakening. Its lovely to see.

Cheers,
Tricia

I remember telling my shocked primary school teacher the reason for the world's problems is that there "wasn't enough people born with 'emotional intelligence'". It's 20 years later, and I still think the same, that we're up against it big time.

The responses above are all examples of people who have "emotional intelligence".
